NIBIN Forensic Examiner

Coordinate the processing of firearms and firearm components in support of the Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC) process. Perform physical inspections of various firearms to collect data for verification, testing, and tracking. Test fire firearms to collect physical evidence for data analysis. Support and enter information into the eTrace database, conduct eTrace investigations for firearm ownership, and collaborate with the CGIC team and the ATF. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

Responsibilities

• Review firearm data for accuracy; physically examine firearms for manufacture information; enter required data into the eTrace database.
• Perform eTrace investigations on firearms to determine original owner and subsequent transfer information.
• Assist higher-level supervisory or management staff with preparation of firearms, site maintenance, records keeping, instrument maintenance, data entry, and replenishing supplies as needed.
• Prepare and maintain a variety of technical reports and files in assigned program area.
• Maintain supplies and equipment for the Firearms and eTrace sections; order supplies as needed.
• Provide general clerical support to administrative staff as needed.
• Attend training classes related to assigned duties and responsibilities as necessary.
• Coordinate information sharing with state and federal authorities related to eTrace responsibilities.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice.
• Three (3) years of experience in maintaining records and performing data entry.
• Experience in a scientific laboratory preferred.
• Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain by date of hire.
• Possession of a City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months from date of hire.
• Successful completion of the APD Firearms Safety Course within six (6) months from date of hire.

Working Conditions

Laboratory and field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and human body fluids; exposure to computer screens.
