Newswriter/Producer - PT

About the role

KCAL News has immediate openings for freelance Associate Producers at the Los Angeles Duopoly. You will be a key member of the news team, critical to the overall news image and growth of the station. We are seeking a dedicated, efficient, accurate and creative writer for this position. This is a Writers Guild of America position and membership in WGA is required.

Responsibilities

• Write scripts, edit video, create graphics, and assist in the overall production of stories for the Newscasts
• Assist in news cut-in production when necessary
• Assist Producer and fill-in, when needed, on Newscasts & Cut-Ins
• Build a compelling newscast with high production value in a competitive environment
• Generate story ideas and participate in editorial meetings
• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Must be an excellent storyteller with the ability to craft a news story using words, pictures, sound, and graphics
• Excellent writing skills and copy-editing ability
• Must have proven control room experience and be able to smoothly handle live breaking news
• Newswriting, line producing, editing
• Strong tease/promo writing
• Understand and use digital tools such as social media and OTT platforms to reach viewers and deliver news
• At least five years' experience, preferably in a top 20 market
• Strong people skills
• Experience with Avid iNEWS and Grass Valley Edius System a plus

Pay

Hiring Salary Range: $34.68/hr - $48.98/hr
