Job Responsibilities

  • Notifies hospitals, physician offices, and/or appropriate medical staff concerning infants with abnormal NBS lab results.
  • Collaborates with healthcare providers to ensure linkage to care for infants identified with potential NBS disorders.
  • Establishes and maintains accurate and complete patient case files.
  • Provides guidance and technical assistance to physician offices, hospitals, and health department staff regarding newborn screening procedures, with an emphasis on protocols related to endocrine disorders, hemoglobin disorders, inborn errors of metabolism, and other rare disorders as assigned.
  • Joins forces with other NBS, IT, and PMO staff to develop and implement an electronic patient case management system.
  • Works with all stakeholders on issues related to current and expanded NBS testing.
  • Acquires and maintains competency in new NBS IT system.
  • Collaborates with the SC Public Health Laboratory (PHL) and related Bureau of Maternal & Child Health (MCH) staff to develop and implement Quality Improvement (QI) activities and marketing materials (ex. trainings, newsletters, and reports) for the NBS Program.
  • Teams up with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and related NBS program staff to populate APHL data repository by keying and/or importing select patient data.
  • Participates in pertinent meetings and trainings, other duties as assigned, performs other related duties and special projects as assigned, including required travel if requested, and responds as directed during emergencies which may occur outside normal work hours, and travel if required.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree and relevant program experience. Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Registered nurse (RN)
  • Certified Medical Scientist (MT/MLS)
  • Registered Metabolic Dietitian (RDN/LD)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Certified Genetic Counselor
  • MPH preferred

Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in healthcare science with at least one (1) year of experience working with common conditions included on the newborn screening panel. Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered in meeting the minimum qualifications, subject to approval by the SCDPH Chief Human Resources Officer, or their delegate.

If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver's license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant, being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.

Hybrid Work

The option to work partially remote or adjusted work hours may be available after 12 months of employment for approved positions.
