About the Program

At Portsmouth Regional Hospital, the HCA Healthcare Residency Program is a year-long, paid initiative designed to transition student nurses into registered nurses. The program provides hands-on experience to establish valuable clinical and critical thinking skills through:

  • Advanced clinical training in a specialty area
  • Monthly educational sessions
  • Preceptorship training with a facility preceptor
  • Measurement and evaluation of skills through hands-on simulations
  • Mentoring from experienced nurse leaders
  • Collaborative work on an evidence-based practice project

Now interviewing for the following units with flexible start date options available starting in 2027:

  • Inpatient Medical
  • Inpatient Surgical
  • Progressive Care
  • Neuro Trauma
  • Interventional Care Unit
  • Cardiac Medical Unit
  • Emergency Department
  • Seabrook Free Standing Emergency Department
  • Dover Free Standing Emergency Department
  • Behavioral Health

Shift preferences (day or night) will be discussed during the initial interview.

Responsibilities

The RN Resident coordinates and delivers high-quality, patient-centered care in accordance with department-specific requirements and nursing scope and standards. Responsibilities include:

  • Assessing patient condition during admission and each scheduled shift, reporting any changes in status
  • Performing procedures, monitoring, or other functions as ordered by medical providers
  • Documenting care administration in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner
  • Administering prescribed medications and monitoring patient response
  • Notifying providers and intervening in the event of unintended medication responses
  • Responding promptly to patient requests and anticipating patient needs proactively
  • Teaching patients, families, and caregivers about medical conditions, treatment plans, medications, side effects, and follow-up measures
  • Translating complex medical terminology to ensure complete understanding

Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited nursing program
  • Registered Nurse License or Graduate Nurse in the State
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) obtained within 30 days of employment
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) obtained within 1 year of employment
  • Other certifications may be required during employment
  • No previous experience needed
  • Some travel may be needed for training
