About the role
This role is responsible for providing first level Smart Hands support to second level and third level support teams onsite in Hillsboro, OR, delivering end-user support in a data-center environment.
Responsibilities
- Maintain network environment in support of physical touch (Smart Hands) for Incident and Request tickets.
- Provide Service Request Support by working with remote Network Support Teams to install hardware or patch cables to enable new services for customers.
- Provide incident support by collaborating with remote Level 2/3 teams to resolve outages and fix issues, including replacement of cabling or hardware components.
- Participate in Hardware Rack and Stack installation of Network and Server equipment, cable management, and installation of required Fiber and Copper Patch leads; provide console access to Remote Team for configuration if required and test connectivity after installation.
- Receive Hardware shipments for data center equipment landings, validate Purchase Orders, and document accuracy of all hardware and components received.
- Update and maintain accurate Asset records in the ServiceNow asset database.
- Unbox and recycle materials; move equipment from dock to storage rooms, staging areas, or data-center racks.
- Install or retrofit network/server racks, including rail and shelving installation.
- Perform power and network cable installation and cable management.
- Scan and label installed devices (network or server).
- Designate parts identified for spare-part stock inventory.
- Handle proper e-waste disposal and equipment shipping/receiving as needed.
- Provide escort service for vendors/technicians.
- Complete Work Request Tasks from the ServiceNow ticket system.
Requirements
- Higher education or degree (or foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution preferred, but not required; 1 to 3 years of progressive experience in the specialty may substitute for each year of education.
- 2+ years of experience in racking, stacking, connecting, and providing basic configuration support of networking or server devices.
- Ability to withstand working in a hot enclosed environment (e.g., data center hot aisles) for short time spans.
- Must be able to perform work while on a ladder (required for top-of-rack installations).
- Must be able to work independently as well as in teams of 3–4 and be flexible.
- Must be able to lift 35 lbs. solo.
- Must be willing to travel between buildings using personal car/foot.
- May be required to walk, sit, stand, crawl, or kneel for extended periods.
- Excellent customer service skills and written/verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of Microsoft suite (Outlook, Excel, and Word primarily) and Windows 10.
- Ability to work in data centers and networking rooms.
- Must be able to communicate by telephone, email, or face-to-face.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge or experience in structured network cabling:
- Copper: Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Connector Types – RJ45
- Fiber: Multimode, Single Mode, Connector Types – ST, SC, LC
- WiFi hardware: Wireless LAN Controllers, Wireless Access Points.
- Networking: IP Addressing, Layer 2 VLAN, Ethernet Switching hardware (Chassis, Supervisor, Line Cards, Power Supplies), Transceiver Types – SX, LX, SR, LR.
- Cable Troubleshooting Knowledge/Experience:
- Fluke Testers: Copper – Wire Map, Link Test; Fiber – OTDR Testing
- Fluke Aircheck: Wireless Testing
Pay
The rate for this position is between $15.71 - $20.95 per hour, unless local minimum wage is higher. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
