Network Development Manager, Frontier Networking
About the role
The Core Networking team is looking for a Sr. Network Development Manager to join our Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) team. You will manage teams that build, deploy, and scale the Amazon networks supporting AWS, customers, and other business units across multiple global data centers.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. The team supports all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure customers have continual access to innovation. You’ll collaborate with diverse teams of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers to deliver high standards for safety, security, and seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost.
AWS Core Networking focuses on building data centers and the networks that allow them to function efficiently. The team owns solutions for aggregating racks and interconnecting data centers, balancing efficiency, performance, and reliability to ensure customer access to applications and data. Amazon’s network is a key differentiator for AWS, enabling global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Drive operational excellence, including creating processes and procedures to improve efficiency, setting and enforcing network standards, and supporting internal customers.
- Measure and report network quality metrics, including issue tracking, capacity analysis, vendor equipment/failure analysis, and network performance.
- Manage team performance and career development, including regular one-on-one meetings, technical and soft-skill mentoring, and overseeing an 8x7x365 operational rota.
- Develop and improve incident and change management processes, including tool and process enhancements to scale with Amazon’s rapid expansion.
- Lead recruiting and hiring for the team, including evaluating candidates, participating in interviews, and ensuring proper onboarding and training.
- Drive automation initiatives by identifying opportunities and collaborating with software teams to integrate automation into network engineering workflows.
- Define and deliver strategic goals for the team, aligning resources and communicating status to leadership.
- Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation and manage critical events under pressure.
- Conduct deep-dive and root-cause analysis of network events to improve processes and prevent future customer impact.
- Travel to data centers, network sites, and Amazon/customer offices as needed.
About the team
AWS Network Fabric Engineering (NFE) owns data center network services that provide unconstrained connectivity for AWS customers, including EC2, EBS, S3, and Amazon CDO Services. The team manages end-to-end internal network connections, scaling, and operational functions for both traditional data centers and newer offerings like Outposts and Local Zones.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or above in computer science or equivalent.
- 5+ years of engineering experience.
- 5+ years of people management experience or relevant leadership experience, managing a team of 8+ individual contributors.
- 3+ years of past experience with network engineering either as a manager or individual contributor.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience presenting root cause analysis and error correction from operational events to senior management.
- Working knowledge of developing operational metrics.
- Working knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP, Routing/Switching & Troubleshooting).
- Linux experience, ability to script in Python, Perl, or shell, and demonstrated experience automating and managing networks with software.
- Experience representing your team/technical area to senior management.
- Experience contributing to the creation and implementation of high-quality, high-volume recruiting plans.

Pay
The base salary range for this position varies by location. Final compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and location, and includes sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
