At Alvernia University in Reading, PA, the Network Administrator will maintain the network infrastructure, collaborating with a team of network and system administrators to ensure effective IT services. This role also involves assisting with PC management and maintenance as needed and reports directly to the Technical Director.
Schedule
Hours of operation are 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Hours may vary.
Responsibilities
- Work within a team of technical staff to maintain the network infrastructure.
- Configure and upgrade switches, routers, and wireless access points.
- Maintain documentation on all network equipment, including configuration files and network maps.
- Work with the maintenance department to install all cabling, ensuring installations meet industry standards and best practices, including certifications and appropriate labeling.
- Assist with the implementation of Changes (especially those involving project task work) approved by the CAB (Change Advisory Board).
- Work with and configure internal and external monitoring systems to ensure alerts are generated for service outages.
- Conduct capacity planning by developing procedures to measure the capacity for network devices and hosted applications relative to current and future activities. Coordinate the acquisition of additional network resources as necessary.
- Work closely with the Systems Admin Team to ensure network security and manage network-wide security, including all connecting devices. This includes managing security policies, procedures, and reviews.
- Maintain a list of all statically assigned IP addresses and work with public-facing IP address space.
- Provide the Technical Director and CIO with budgetary requirements for hardware and software needed to support network administration across all sites.
- Stay current with technological developments related to server hardware, software, security, and networking, as well as management practices, by reading publications, subscribing to Internet lists, attending conferences and workshops, and meeting with colleagues.
- Maintain detailed, up-to-date technical and operations documentation for the entire network on the University Intranet.
- Assist with computer maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technologies or related field, or an equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
- Project management training or equivalent project management experience.
- 3–5 years of experience in network administration and PC maintenance.
- Display strong end-user orientation and customer service skills.
- Strong understanding of technical troubleshooting methodology.
- Self-directed with a strong desire to succeed.
- Demonstrated excellence in teamwork as well as excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed.
- Orientation to detail and thorough documentation.
- Ability to work with a range of technical staff to develop joint solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a Higher Education environment.
- Experience managing FortiGate Firewalls, HP (Aruba), FortiWireless, Ubiquiti, and Windows Server.
- Comfortable with direct communication at all levels of technical and business resources.
- Experience with network development, design, implementation, and maintenance.
- Proven track record in network architecture development, design, implementation, and maintenance.
