About the role

The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) is seeking a motivated Engineer I or II to join its Water Rights Program. This role contributes to the sustainable management of South Dakota’s surface and groundwater resources.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical reviews of water use applications to ensure availability and prevent impairment of existing uses.
  • Inspect water systems and dams for safety and compliance.
  • Participate in lake level surveys.
  • Manage the state's observation well network.
  • Investigate complaints, resolve disputes, and license well drillers.
  • Ensure adherence to construction standards.
  • Testify before the Water Management Board and make recommendations on water permit approvals.
  • Utilize GIS and Microsoft Office tools for analysis and documentation.
  • Provide customer service and technical assistance on water rights issues.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental, civil, geological, or related engineering field.
  • Ability to obtain a valid South Dakota drivers license.
  • Possession of a valid South Dakota driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

  • Desire for continual learning and strong problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong decision-making skills grounded in established engineering guidelines.
  • Clear and effective communication abilities—both verbal and written.
  • Collaboration with a team of engineers to protect and manage the state’s water resources.

Skills

  • Knowledge of environmental, geological, or civil engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Office and GIS software.
