Music Technology and Digital Media Librarian

About the role

The Music Technology and Digital Media Librarian at the Lewis Music Library leads the Audio Lab, oversees specialized media equipment, manages budgets and inventories, and supervises student staff. This position supports evolving music technologies by developing programs, services, instructional materials, and outreach to enhance engagement with library resources. Responsibilities include providing research consultations, supporting faculty, coordinating resource acquisition, preserving historical audio materials, and advancing innovative research. The role also involves managing website content, communications, and online guides while collaborating across MIT to support music technology instruction, research, learning, and access to physical and digital media collections.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Audio Lab and oversee specialized media equipment.
• Manage budgets, inventories, and student staff.
• Develop programs, services, instructional materials, and outreach to enhance engagement with library resources.
• Provide research consultations and faculty support.
• Coordinate resource acquisition and preserve historical audio materials.
• Advance innovative research in music technology.
• Manage website content, communications, and online guides.
• Collaborate across MIT to support music technology instruction, research, learning, and access to media collections.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Music or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
• Minimum of three years of professional experience in audio production and engineering.
• Strong knowledge of music software including Finale, Sibelius, MuseScore, Logic Pro, Reaper, Max (Cycling ’74), SmartScore, and WavePad.
• Ability to generate reports, support users with technology and equipment, adapt to change, and solve problems.
• Knowledge of HTML, Java, or Python.
• Deep understanding of audio production tools, recording formats, and media technologies.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with faculty, students, and staff.

Qualifications

• Preferred: MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution.
• Preferred: Academic library experience, including Alma/Primo.
• Preferred: Knowledge of music encoding, computational composing, and music technology.
• Preferred: Experience supervising students or staff.
