Job Description

The Industrial Maintenance Mechanic (multi-craft) position is available at the Lexington SC Box Facility 129 Zenker Road. The position is full-time, 7pm-7am shift, and offers a sign-on bonus of $2,000 ($1,000 after 30 days, $1,000 after 6 months).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts.
  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections.
  • Inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Adjusts functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Repairs or replaces defective parts.
  • Installs special functional and structural parts in devices.
  • Lubricates and cleans parts.
  • Starts devices to test their performance.
  • Sets up and operates various metalworking tools to make and repair parts.
  • Moves heavy weight equipment with the aid of mechanical means such as forklifts, pry bars, and chain falls.
  • Carries, lifts, and transports parts to and from work locations and maintenance shops by hand or mechanical means.
  • Wears personal protective equipment including cut-resistant gloves and sleeves, heat-resistant gloves and sleeves, safety glasses, goggles, face shields, earplugs, and steel-toed shoes.
  • Uses hand tools such as wrenches, hammers, punches, screwdrivers, pliers, and pipe wrenches on a continuous basis to perform normal duties.
  • Performs plant startup tasks, energizing all equipment and ensuring operation.
  • Installs power supply wiring and conduit for newly installed machines and equipment such as conveyors and programmable controllers.
  • Connects power supply wires to machines and equipment, and connects cables and wires between machines and equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs or replaces faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards.
  • Replaces electric motor bearings and rewires motors.
  • Diagnoses and replaces faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machines and equipment as necessary.
  • Cleans work area, tools, and equipment.
  • Utilizes computer for work order entry and completion status.
  • Tests malfunctioning machinery and discusses malfunction with maintenance manager.
  • Replaces faulty electrical components on machines such as relays, switches, motors, and positions sensing devices.
  • Diagnoses and repairs or replaces faulty electronic components, such as printed circuit boards.
  • Replaces electric motor bearings, brushes, and rewire motors for installation.
  • Diagnoses and replaces faulty mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components of machines and equipment as necessary.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly stands, walks, uses hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Frequently stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls.
  • Frequent climbing in, on, and around equipment and machinery to make adjustments, repairs, and perform maintenance.
  • Regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Regularly works in confined areas or awkward positions.
  • Works in near proximity to fork lift traffic.
  • Works in near proximity to steam injected vessels with temperatures ranging from 340 to 370.
  • Works in environments with vibration, fumes, or airborne particles.
  • Works in environments with temperatures ranging from 50°F to 110°F with seasonal changes.

Skills Required

  • High school diploma or GED and experience in general machine and fitting shop practice, welding, maintenance troubleshooting, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and pipefitting.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
  • Ability to perform calculations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to read a tape measure, micrometer, dial indicators, pi tapes, and manometers.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
