About the role

The incumbent in this 10-month-per-year position (schedule follows the school calendar) provides paraprofessional academic classroom instruction or student-management aide support at the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind. The role contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs for blind/visually impaired students, provides educational instruction, and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver paraprofessional academic classroom instruction.
  • Support student management and behavior.
  • Assist in designing and delivering academic instructional programs for blind/visually impaired students.
  • Use varied techniques to encourage appropriate student behaviors.

Requirements

  • At least two years of college credits (typically 60 credits in Minnesota) from an accredited institution of higher education; or
  • An associate’s or higher degree; or
  • A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (Parapro or Paraeducator) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics, or readiness.
  • Knowledge or experience working with students in an educational and/or dormitory setting or a similar caregiver setting.
  • Intervener certificate or the ability to voice and fluent ASL skills (determined at interview). If the candidate does not hold an intervener certificate, they must obtain one by attending the next 6-week intervener training session.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check within the past 12 months.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of multi-challenged/blind/visually impaired students and educational practices.
  • Experience working with blind/visually impaired students in an educational setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance).
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk throughout a workday.

Pay

$24.54 – $31.43 / hourly

Schedule

  • Day shift: Monday–Thursday 7:30 am–3:00 pm, Friday 7:30 am–2:00 pm.
  • Days of work: Monday–Friday.
  • No travel required.
