About the role

The MRI Technologist operates magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce cross-sectional images of the patient's body for diagnostic purposes. Interviews patients to explain magnetic resonance imaging procedures and ensures removal of those metal objects which are hazardous to patient and equipment when magnet is activated. Positions patients on examining tables and places specified coils such as head coils or knee coils, close to areas of interest, following protocols requested by radiologists. Demonstrates use of microphones that allow patient and technologist to communicate during examinations. Performs phlebotomy as needed to safely inject contrast media as indicated and approved. Enters data such as patient history, anatomical areas to be scanned, orientations specified, and positions of entry into the magnetic resonance imaging equipment (head or feet first) into computers. Keys commands to specify scan sequences and adjust transmitters and receivers into computers. Observes patients through windows of control rooms and on closed-circuit TV screens to monitor patient safety and comfort and communicates regularly with patients to assure comfort and compliance. Views images of areas being scanned on video monitors to ensure quality of acquisition datasets. Modifies pulse sequence parameters as needed to achieve optimal results. Moves DICOM datasets to destinations and storage per policy and procedure. Alerts and controls access to anyone about to enter the magnet room to danger of wearing or carrying metal around the magnet. Acts as a gatekeeper to maintain a safe environment.
