About the role

The MRI Technologist performs diagnostic testing according to established departmental procedures, ensuring the delivery of quality patient care. This position operates diagnostic equipment, including peripheral equipment, in a safe and efficient manner to obtain optimal test results. The MRI Technologist manages the patient during the diagnostic procedure to meet patient care standards and maintains a safe environment for themselves and patients by applying knowledge of MRI safety practices.

This role supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation. The MRI Technologist also ensures supplies are maintained, reports equipment problems, and actively participates in student clinical education activities where applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Perform diagnostic MRI testing as directed by the Radiologist at a competent technical level with minimal supervision.
  • Operate MRI and peripheral diagnostic equipment safely and efficiently to obtain optimal test results.
  • Manage patient care during diagnostic procedures, adhering to established standards.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff by applying MRI safety practices.
  • Ensure supplies are stocked and report equipment issues to appropriate staff.
  • Support student clinical education activities as applicable.
  • Participate in performance improvement efforts and demonstrate teamwork.
  • Demonstrate department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited radiologic technologist or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) program.
  • Must meet one of the following qualification pathways upon hire or transfer:
    • Pathway 1: Active MRI Certification by American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) – NJDEP license not required.
    • Pathway 2: Active MRI-Only Certification by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)(MR) – NJDEP license not required.
    • Pathway 3: Active Dual Radiography and MRI certification with State Licensure: ARRT certification in Radiography (R) and MRI (MR), and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) license in Radiography.
  • Incumbents hired or transferred prior to 4/25 must obtain ARRT-MR certification within 18 months of hire or transfer date.
  • American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers required upon hire or transfer.
  • One year of diagnostic testing experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; training will be provided, and skill will be required within 30-60 days.
  • NJDEP State License must be renewed biennially; ARRT certification must be renewed annually.

Skills

  • Ability to multitask with attention to fine detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to stand for the majority of the time and sit in front of a CRT monitor for extended periods.
  • Extensive pushing, pulling, and lifting of patients; ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment

  • Potential exposure to hazards and risks of a hospital environment, including infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, potential injury, and hazardous substances (e.g., electromagnetic radiation).
  • Core competencies assessed primarily on patient populations servicing MRI for cardiac/cardiovascular, mammary, GI, endocrine, renal, and skeletal conditions and diseases, including but not limited to CAD, PVD, CVA/TIA, COPD, CHF, and oncology.
