Motor Vehicle Representative 1, G-9 (Hourly) (NY HELPS) - Albany District Office

Responsible for substantial in-person or telephone contact with members of the public seeking services or information regarding licenses, registrations, identification, testing, insurance, penalties, hearings, and related agency programs.

Responsibilities

  • Effectively use a computer with multiple applications running simultaneously.
  • Operate telecommunication consoles, cameras, cash drawers, photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, and calculators.
  • Process customer payments including cash, checks, and credit card charges.
  • Inventory documents, license plates, registration stickers, and other security items.
  • Wear a headset and answer telephone calls distributed by a complex telephonic system (calls may be monitored for quality assurance).
  • Handle uncooperative or hostile individuals calmly, courteously, and reasonably under stressful or confrontational circumstances.

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma and one year of experience in a position where your primary responsibility was providing customer service to the general public (either in an environment with substantial face-to-face interaction or in a call center environment), or
  • 30 college semester credit hours.

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment (no examination required), but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive status converted to competitive status without needing to take a civil service test.

While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Customer service is defined as dealing with many different individuals on a continuous basis where verbal communication is the primary means of accomplishing duties. General public refers to a broad range of people, not limited to a specific group.
