About the role
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic/HVAC position at Aberdeen Proving Grounds supports the Maintenance and Supply Divisions. This role is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and requires employees to join after beginning employment.
Responsibilities
- Provides air conditioning/refrigeration maintenance and repair services.
- Ensures correct operation of refrigerant dispensing and recovery equipment and maintains accurate records in compliance with relevant regulations.
- Repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, or tractors.
- Determines and carries out necessary repairs based on diagnosis of malfunctioning components.
- Replaces worn or damaged parts such as piston rings, bearings, or engine parts.
- Grinds and adjusts valves, rebuilds carburetors, and overhauls transmissions.
- Oversees fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- At least two (2+) years of experience as a motor vehicle mechanic and HVAC repair technician.
- Certified in accordance with Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technicians' EPA Certification standards for the equipment and materials being utilized.
- Valid state-issued Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and ability to obtain/maintain a forklift license.
- Basic to intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Qualifications
- Physical demands include bending, squatting, stooping, crouching, leaning, sitting, and balancing.
- Work involves using power/automated hand tools and lifting/carrying/pushing/slidin up to 50 pounds.
- Requires standing for extended periods of time.
Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Knowledge of automotive and HVAC systems.
- Ability to follow safety protocols.

Security Clearance
To be eligible for this position, you must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust level security clearance. Due to the nature of the work, U.S. citizenship is required.
