About the role

This is a dedicated on-site position; we do not provide emergency roadside repairs. The Mobile Trailer Technician II performs certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework. Work is performed at the customer's site. Under supervision, the Technician II can perform more advanced repairs and assists senior technicians while continuing to learn additional mechanical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on various trailers and equipment with little or no supervision.
  • Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using a company-issued iOS device and the proprietary TRAIT application.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems, including trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, and brake chambers.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical components.
  • Follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Manage parts inventory and equipment on the company-issued service truck and perform periodic reconciliation.
  • Maintain and operate the company-issued service vehicle, conducting safety checks and pre-/post-trip inspections.
  • Work with clients and customers to assess needs, provide information, resolve problems, and meet expectations.
  • Manage concurrent tasks, prioritize work-related activities, and allocate time effectively.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs in a mobile/field environment.
  • Respond to call center-dispatched unscheduled service and maintenance requests.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, and jacks.
  • Maintain high productivity and work within or close to Standard Repair Times.
  • Obtain parts from approved vendors as necessary for repairs.
  • Communicate with management and support teams for approvals, purchase orders, or to discuss repair findings.
  • Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, environmental policies, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
  • Participate in and complete all company-required safety training.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various trailer equipment and systems, including welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework.
  • Inspect, test, and diagnose defective equipment using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assist Mobile Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.
  • Maintain the company-issued service truck, conduct safety checks, and perform daily pre/post-trip inspections.
  • Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Remain up-to-date on safety protocols and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years’ experience in a related field (Trailers). Alternatively, any level of degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline or 5 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment. A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical.
  • Due to interstate commerce regulations, candidates must be at least 21 years or older.
  • Valid driver’s license required; must be able to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.

Qualifications

  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification (required or obtained within 18 months).
  • Preferred certifications: ASE 608/609, ASE T4 (Brakes), ASE T5 (Suspension), ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems), ASE T7 (HVAC).

Skills

  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and apply new information for problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Stamina to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring, including performing repetitive tasks.

  • Strong communication skills for conveying information effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate tools and equipment needed for tasks.
  • Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions and approaches to problems.
