About the role

Cox Fleet is hiring a Mobile Trailer Technician II to join our team. This is a dedicated on-site position performing certified DOT inspections, Preventative Maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body, and framework. Work is performed at the customer's site. The Mobile Trailer Technician II can perform more advanced repairs under the supervision of a Sr Mobile Trailer Technician or higher and assists with repairs while continuing to learn additional advanced mechanical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on various trailers and equipment with little or no supervision.
  • Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using a company-issued iOS device and the proprietary TRAIT application.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems including trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, and brake chambers.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and all other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical components.
  • Follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Manage parts inventory and equipment on a company-issued service truck and perform periodic reconciliation.
  • Maintain and operate company-issued service vehicle, conduct safety checks, and pre-/post-trip inspections.
  • Apply knowledge acquired through formal training or on-the-job experience to perform job duties.
  • Assess client needs, provide information or assistance, and resolve problems.
  • Manage concurrent tasks, prioritize work-related activities, and allocate time effectively.
  • Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs in a mobile/field environment.
  • Respond to call center-dispatched unscheduled service and maintenance requests.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, and jacks.
  • Work with a high degree of independence and manage your daily schedule.
  • Maintain high productivity and work within or close to Standard Repair Times.
  • Obtain parts from approved vendors as necessary for repairs.
  • Communicate with management and support teams for approvals, purchase orders, or repair notes.
  • Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Participate in and complete company-required safety training.
  • Maintain good working relationships with customers and vendors.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various trailer equipment and systems, including welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework.
  • Identify problems, evaluate information, and use sound judgment to generate and assess alternatives.
  • Inspect, test, and diagnose defective equipment using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assist Mobile Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years' experience in a related field (Trailers). Alternatively, any level of degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline or 5 years' experience in a related field.
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Must be able to successfully complete and pass a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
  • A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical.
  • Due to interstate operating authority commerce regulations, candidates must be at least 21 years or older.
  • Valid driver's license required; must be able to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.

Qualifications

Required within 18 months:

  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification

Preferred Certifications:

  • ASE 608/609 certification
  • ASE T4 (Brakes) certification
  • ASE T5 (Suspension) certification
  • ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems) certification
  • ASE T7 (HVAC) certification

Skills

  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and apply new information for problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Stamina to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring.
  • Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships accurately.
  • Effective two-way communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate tools and equipment needed for tasks.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of solutions or approaches to problems.

Pay

Hourly pay rate is in the range of $26.73 - $40.10 per hour. The base rate may vary based on location and the candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. The position may also be eligible for additional compensation such as commission or incentive programs.

Employees are eligible for a minimum of 6.67 hours of paid time off every month and seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year, plus additional paid time off for bereavement, voting, jury duty, volunteering, military leave, and parental leave.
