About the role

This is a dedicated on-site position; we do not provide emergency roadside repairs. The Mobile Trailer Technician II will perform certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties such as trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body, and framework. Work is performed at the customer's site. The Mobile Trailer Technician II can perform more advanced repairs under the supervision of a Sr Mobile Trailer Technician or higher and assists with repairs while continuing to learn additional advanced mechanical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on various trailers and equipment with little or no supervision.
  • Document work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using a company-issued iOS device and proprietary TRAIT application.
  • Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailers and systems, including trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps, engines, liftgates, and brake chambers.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely manner.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical components while adhering to safe operating practices.
  • Manage parts inventory and equipment on a company-issued service truck, including periodic reconciliation.
  • Maintain and operate a company-issued service vehicle, conducting safety checks and pre-/post-trip inspections.
  • Work with clients to assess needs, provide information, resolve problems, and meet expectations.
  • Manage concurrent tasks, prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations effectively.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance, DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs in a mobile/field environment.
  • Respond to call center-dispatched unscheduled service and maintenance requests.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, and jacks.
  • Work with a high degree of independence and manage your daily schedule.
  • Maintain high productivity and work within or close to Standard Repair Times.
  • Obtain parts from approved vendors as necessary for repairs.
  • Communicate with management and support teams for approvals, purchase orders, or repair estimates.
  • Perform all work in compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Complete all required company safety training.
  • Maintain good working relationships with customers and vendors.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various trailer equipment and systems, including welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework.
  • Inspect, test, and diagnose defective equipment using tools like handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assist Mobile Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years’ experience in a related field (Trailers). Alternatively, any level of degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline or 5 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required job duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a DOT-regulated pre-employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment. A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical.
  • Due to interstate commerce regulations, candidates must be at least 21 years or older.
  • Valid driver’s license required; must be able to obtain and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
  • ASE T8 (PMI) certification required or must be obtained within 18 months.

  • ASE 608/609 certification

  • ASE T5 (Suspension) certification
  • ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems) certification
  • ASE T7 (HVAC) certification

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and apply new information for problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Physical ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Stamina to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring.
  • Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships accurately.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for effective two-way communication.
  • Ability to determine the appropriate tools and equipment needed for tasks.
  • Use logic and reasoning to evaluate alternative solutions and approaches to problems.
