About the role
The North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist Program acknowledges individuals who have met specific requirements to provide support to those with mental health or substance abuse issues. This role involves crisis response, developing and managing crisis plans, coordinating care, and ensuring the safety and dignity of recipients.
Responsibilities
- Provide crisis response 24/7/365, assessing crises, determining risks, and providing face-to-face responses as needed.
- Create and revise crisis plans for new recipients and update existing plans.
- Obtain authorization for additional services after completing 32 units of service.
- Document daily full-service notes in black ink on the day of service.
- Coordinate movement across levels of care, including transportation, and assist with discharge planning.
- Maintain and manage presenting psychiatric and addiction symptoms.
- Supervise Peer Support Paraprofessionals and forward documentation as required.
- Report changes in consumer conditions, family situations, or needs to relevant personnel.
- Report accidents, incidents, and suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation to the Mobile Crisis Management Director or Designee.
- Be familiar with agency policies and procedures, including emergency services and medication administration.
- Absorb HIPAA regulations and maintain confidentiality.
- Operate office equipment and obtain required training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Current or former consumer of mental health and/or substance abuse services.
- At least 1 year of recovery time between diagnosis and application as a PSS.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Completed a 40-hour Peer Support Specialist training curriculum and hold a valid certificate.
- Additional 20 hours of training in appropriate crisis intervention strategies.
- Two Personal Reference Forms completed by two individuals, according to state requirements.
- One year’s experience in providing crisis management services in settings like assertive outreach, emergency departments, or similar 24/7 response roles.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in a human service field with one year of experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a human service field with two years of experience.
- Bachelor's degree in another field with four years of experience.
Skills
Knowledge of crisis intervention strategies, ability to maintain confidentiality, familiarity with agency policies and procedures, and proficiency in using office equipment.
