Middle School Spanish Teacher/Advisor

Type: Full-time, one-year position for the 2026–27 school year with the possibility of renewal

About the role

Durham Academy (DA) is seeking a Middle School Spanish Teacher to join the World Languages Department. The successful candidate will teach four sections of Spanish to students in grades 7 and 8 and serve as an advisor to a group of up to 12 students. The department uses the ACTFL framework to guide instruction, and preference will be given to candidates familiar with ACTFL or competency-based feedback systems. All candidates should be willing to learn and incorporate these approaches into their practice.

Responsibilities

• Teach four sections of Spanish to 7th and 8th grade students
• Serve as an advisor to a group of up to 12 students
• Incorporate the ACTFL framework and competency-based feedback into instruction
• Create and promote an equitable and inclusive curriculum and learning environment
• Use technology thoughtfully and creatively to enhance teaching and learning
• Collaborate actively with colleagues and participate in the life of the school beyond the classroom
• Build supportive relationships with students and successful partnerships with parents/caregivers
• Commit to continued professional growth and lifelong learning

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (required)
• Advanced degree or commensurate experience (preferred)
• Experience with student-centered, inquiry-based teaching approaches
• Deep content knowledge and enthusiasm for nurturing student self-awareness and confidence
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in education
• Cultural competency and ability to work in a collaborative environment
