Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Supervisor, Evening

About the role

Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, this position is responsible for staff orientation, training, competency assessment, and daily supervision of work activities of personnel. This role does not require direct patient care.

Responsibilities

• Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees.
• Plans, organizes, delineates, and schedules duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in conjunction with the Laboratory Managers.
• Assists other technologists as needed with technical problems and interpretation of results.
• Determines the priority of work at the laboratory, assuring the timely completion of work.
• Orders and maintains an appropriate level of inventory and laboratory supplies.
• Maintains manuals on all Standard Operating Procedures and required records and reports.
• Ensures staff adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
• Oversees orientation, training, and competency assessments, assuring staff follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
• Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.
• Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
• Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
• Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either corrects the problems or immediately notifies the appropriate supervisor.
• Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Sciences required.
• Certificate/Diploma in Clinical Laboratory Sciences required.
• Medical Technologist (ASCP) certification [MLT, MT, MLA, Histologists] from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC) required.
• 3-5 years of laboratory experience required.
• 1-2 years of supervisory experience preferred.

Skills

• Theoretical and practical knowledge of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise subordinates.
• Advanced analytical skills and judgment to work with complex instrumentation and resolve technical equipment problems.
• Ability to relate test results to normal and pathological states and interpret quality control data.
• Understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
• Comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment operation, maintenance, repair, and analytic techniques.
• Ability to work independently, evaluate situations, and act appropriately.
• Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state, and accreditation requirements.
• Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Advanced computer skills and understanding of test principles, equipment operation, and computer system operations.
• Ability to make appropriate decisions, develop, and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership.
• Ability to perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists.
• Strong attention to detail and adherence to written protocols, including communication to lab leadership when issues are identified.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with staff, physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.

Pay

Entry-level rate is $43.00 per hour and increases with experience.

Schedule

• 12:00 PM – 8:30 PM or 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM shift options.
• Scheduled weekly hours: 40.
• Employee type: Regular.
• Work shift: Evening (United States of America).
