Clinical Laboratory Supervisor - Microbiology - Evenings

MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Microbiology Laboratory plays a vital role in diagnosing and managing infections in immunocompromised and oncology patients. This highly specialized laboratory provides critical testing that supports timely treatment decisions, infection prevention, and patient safety. About the role

This Laboratory Supervisor position combines technical expertise, operational leadership, and people management within one of the nation’s leading cancer centers. As a subject-matter expert, you will oversee daily laboratory operations, support a team dedicated to accurate and timely microbiology testing, and ensure laboratory procedures align with regulatory and institutional standards. The role involves technical leadership, troubleshooting complex processes, implementing new methodologies, and supporting laboratory information system (LIS) and electronic medical record (EMR) initiatives. A key aspect is people leadership, including supervising staff, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, coaching, scheduling, and fostering a collaborative culture.

Responsibilities

• Supervise daily activities in a clinical microbiology laboratory as a subject-matter expert.
• Lead troubleshooting of challenging processes, procedures, and computer functions; ensure staff competency in computer operations.
• Oversee coordination and maintenance of policies and procedures for all clinical testing; review and update SOPs to align with current practices.
• Lead evaluation and validation of new methodologies, tests, and instrumentation.
• Assist with LIS and EMR implementation, testing, and modifications.
• Perform clinical lab assays, tests, and procedures to ensure optimal patient care.
• Support administrative onboarding for new staff members.
• Ensure staff training, productivity standards, and performance coaching; lead process improvements impacting productivity and lab function.
• Oversee all testing phases (pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical) to ensure alignment with lab policies.
• Foster a team environment built on communication, respect, and excellence.
• Manage personnel activities: performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, scheduling, coaching, mentoring, and timekeeping.
• Ensure supplies and equipment are ordered and maintained to meet testing needs.
• Ensure staff compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.
• Perform or oversee competency assessments for testing personnel in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Enforce policies and procedures; participate in strategic development of employees and process improvements.
• Oversee new procedures, lab bulletins, test cost analysis, business plans, competency tests, and training for new tests or instrumentation.
• Ensure quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement methods are implemented and performed.
• Participate in quality surveillance programs, including CAP mock inspections every six months.
• Oversee the Proficiency Testing program according to CAP regulations.

Requirements

Education:

• Required: Bachelor’s degree in a related science field or Molecular Genetic Technology, or successful completion of a NAACLS-accredited Clinical Laboratory Science/Molecular Genetic Technology program.
• Preferred: Master’s or Doctorate degree in a related science field.

Work Experience:

• Required: 8 years of clinical laboratory compliance and operations experience, including 3 years of lead or supervisory experience, or
• 6 years of clinical laboratory compliance and operations experience, including 3 years of lead or supervisory experience, with a Master’s degree, or
• 4 years of clinical laboratory compliance and operations experience, including 3 years of lead or supervisory experience, with a Doctorate degree.
• Completion of MD Anderson’s LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for up to 2 years of supervisory experience.
• 2 years of clinical laboratory compliance and operations experience may substitute for required certification.

Licenses and Certifications (required upon hire):

• ASCP – American Society of Clinical Pathologist Technologist/Scientist/Specialist certification, or
• CHS – Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (ACHI), or
• CHT – Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (ACHI), or
• MDT – Molecular Diagnostics Tech (AMT), or
• MT – Medical Technologist (AMT).

Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 1:00 PM – 9:30 PM, with rotating weekend and holiday coverage.

Pay

Minimum salary: $101,000 USD. Midpoint salary: $126,500 USD. Maximum salary: $152,000 USD.
