About the Role

This benchmark role manages the Naval Architecture/Structural Engineering segment within the Fleet Sustainment Engineering organization. The position provides direction to subordinates and oversees structural engineering specifications for product design, maintenance, and operations involving metals, non-metallic, or composite materials.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, research, investigate, and develop structural engineering specifications for product design, operation, and maintenance, including structures, equipment, and designs.
• Perform foundation design allowables and structural modeling.
• Specialize in structural engineering areas such as dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue, and thermal analysis.
• Utilize tools like NASTRAN, FEMAP, AutoCAD, FCCS, PC Calc/SHCP, and other software applications.
• Evaluate design factors including manufacturability, material availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and cost.
• Review completed engineering and design products for clarity, completeness, standards compliance, and accuracy.
• Identify design errors, omissions, and deficiencies, recommending revisions or improvements.
• Ensure timely issuance of availability weight reports, damage control updates, stability requests, incline experiments, ship checks, and associated reports.
• Supervise and manage technical subordinates to meet schedules and resolve operational or technical problems.
• Participate in centralized functional projects, assist with budgets, schedules, and performance standards for the Naval Architecture/Structures group.
• Conduct briefings and participate in technical meetings with internal and external representatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution with 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design, or a Master’s of Science in Engineering with professional registration and 4 years of relevant experience.
• Working knowledge of Naval Architecture and Ship Structures engineering concepts and practices (preferred).
• Familiarity with Ship Stability concepts and practices (preferred).
• Experience with General Overhaul Specifications related to naval ship modernization (preferred).
• Familiarity with structural analysis techniques and incline experiments (preferred).
