About the role

This position manages the Naval Architecture/Structural Engineering segment within the Fleet Sustainment Engineering organization, providing direction to subordinates and overseeing structural engineering specifications for product design and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Analyze, research, investigate, and develop structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic, or composite structural materials for product design, structures, equipment, and maintenance designs.
• Analyze foundation design allowables and associated structural modeling.
• Perform structural engineering specialties including dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue, and thermal analysis.
• Utilize tools such as NASTRAN, FEMAP, AutoCAD, FCCS, PC Calc/SHCP, and other software applications.
• Investigate design factors such as ease of manufacture, material availability, interchangeability, replaceability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specifications.
• Review completed engineering and design products for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
• Identify design errors, omissions, and deficiencies, recommending revisions or improvements.
• Ensure accuracy and timely issuance of availability weight reports, damage control updates, stability requests, incline experiments, ship checks, and associated reports.
• Provide direct supervision and management to technical subordinates and staff to meet schedules or resolve technical issues.
• Participate in centralized functional projects and assist with budgets, schedules, and performance standards for the Naval Architecture/Structures group.
• Conduct briefings and participate in technical meetings with internal and external representatives.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited school and 6 years of progressive technical experience in research, engineering, and design, or equivalent.
• Master’s of Science degree in Engineering with professional registration and 4 years of relevant experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of Naval Architecture and Ship Structures engineering concepts and practices.
• Working knowledge of Ship Stability concepts and practices.
• Familiarity with General Overhaul Specifications related to naval ship modernization.
• Familiarity with structural analysis techniques and incline experiments.
