The Metal Shop Coordinator oversees the safe, efficient, and effective operation of the metal fabrication shop within an industrial facility, supporting data centers, power generation, healthcare, oil & gas, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and industrial facilities where uptime is non-negotiable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise daily activities in the metal shop to support production, maintenance, and facility needs.
  • Operate and maintain metalworking equipment such as welders, shears, press brakes, plasma cutters, grinders, and CNC machines.
  • Perform and oversee welding and fabrication of structural and mechanical components used in facility operations.
  • Maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for all shop equipment; coordinate external service as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety protocols; maintain MSDS and safety documentation.
  • Monitor inventory levels of materials, tools, gases, and consumables; reorder supplies as necessary.
  • Work with engineering, maintenance, and production teams to fabricate parts and assemblies to specifications.
  • Train and supervise shop personnel and maintenance staff in proper tool use, fabrication methods, and safety.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop, including proper storage of materials.
  • Assist in layout design for shop workflow optimization and equipment placement.
  • Complete any other projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a metal fabrication or industrial maintenance role.
  • Proficient in MIG, TIG, and stick welding, with ability to work on a variety of metals.
  • Experience with mechanical fabrication, machine repair, and blueprint reading.
  • Strong knowledge of shop safety practices, OSHA regulations, and PPE requirements.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs., stand for extended periods, and work in a physically demanding environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Forklift and overhead crane operation certification.
  • Familiarity with CNC plasma or milling equipment and CAD/CAM software.
  • Previous leadership experience in a shop or maintenance team environment.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • Standard work week is Monday through Friday, typically 40 hours per week; overtime may be required, including evenings or weekends, based on production demands.
  • Physical exertion may vary; required to regularly stoop, kneel, bend, crouch, frequently stand or walk around the work area, and lift or move objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to high noise levels, heat, dust, and fumes; subjective to seasonal weather conditions (hot in summer and cold in winter months).
  • Use of welding and cutting equipment, hand tools, and heavy machinery; required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Assembling may involve manipulating small parts and using hand tools; good hand-eye coordination and dexterity are essential.
  • Comfortable with occasional repetitive motions.
