Job Summary

A State and Local Tax (SALT) Manager advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, business development, and representing clients in tax disputes. Responsibilities also include conducting tax research, preparing tax returns, and developing tax strategies.

Job Duties

  • Researches complex situations requiring detailed analysis and reporting.

  • Conducts detailed reviews of tax returns and responds to notices from state taxing authorities.

  • Drafts tax memorandums, tax opinions, and other documentation on various tax issues.

  • Applies all applicable state tax consulting sub-specialties and collaborates with other STS professionals.

  • Determines tax planning processes and ensures tax engagement letters are adopted.

  • Manages client expectations and assists in the development of consultative selling strategies.

  • Represents clients before tax authorities on contested issues.

  • Utilizes GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tax-related software.

  • Provides technical client service to multi-state companies with state and local tax issues.

  • Drafts technical memoranda regarding state and local tax issues.

  • Prepares tax accrual workpapers and understands and applies industry standards, along with firm policies and BDO Tax Quality Manual requirements.

  • Reviews studies of tax implications to identify alternative courses of action and develop new ideas.

  • Suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisition and assists in strategy development.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferred in business or focus in business
  • Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., preferred
  • Four (4) years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience or legal professional services or equivalent experience through an advanced degree program
  • Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis
  • Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions
  • Prior experience with corporate taxation, consolidations and partnerships
  • CPA certification or other relevant certification, preferred
  • Software proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word
  • Exposure to and familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools
