Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Tax Manager, State and Local Tax
Job Summary
A State and Local Tax (SALT) Manager advises clients on tax implications, recommends courses of action, and identifies compliance methods. This role involves marketing, business development, and tax compliance, consulting, and controversy representation.
Job Duties
- Researches complex situations requiring research, provides an outline, analyzes findings, and writes detailed reports.
- Conducts detailed tax return reviews, responds to notices, and supports exam teams.
- Drafts tax memorandums, opinions, and documentation, applies tax consulting specialties, and collaborates with other professionals.
- Determines tax planning processes, ensures engagement letters are adopted, and manages client expectations.
- Takes clients before tax authorities on contested issues, utilizes tax software, and negotiates settlements.
- Develops new or improved tax strategies, suggests marketing approaches, and assists in strategy development.
- Supervises STS SALT Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements, trains on relevant software, evaluates performance, and provides feedback.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in business, preferred; Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation or J.D., preferred.
- Four (4) years of prior experience in state and local/multistate experience or legal professional services, or equivalent through an advanced degree program.
- Prior experience supervising tax professionals on a project or engagement basis.
- Prior experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions, and corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships.
- CPA certification or other relevant certification, preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word.
- Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools.
