About the role
The Mental Health Worker (MHW) at Northwell provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of an RN or physician. They assist patients with activities of daily living, provide emotional support, and perform more complex clinical skills as directed.
Responsibilities
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering the standard of care for the patient's age.
- Provides care appropriate to the patient's condition and age, including pediatric, geriatric, and general patient populations.
- Assists with patient admissions, discharge, and transfers.
- Provides morning and evening care, including tasks like bed baths, showers, oral hygiene, combing hair, back care, dressing patients, changing bed linen, cleaning overbed tables, straightening rooms, and assisting with meals.
- Answers patient call lights, anticipates needs, and makes rounds of assigned patients.
- Performs 15-minute safety checks and 1:1 observations of patients as per MD orders.
- Takes and records vital signs, reports abnormal readings to supervising RN, and communicates patient complaints of pain.
- Observes patient mental and physical conditions, reports changes to supervising RN, and maintains a safe environment.
- Communicates clearly and concisely with RNs and medical staff.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Documents patient care according to current standards and policies.
- Attends in-service education programs to learn new treatments, procedures, and developmental skills.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrates flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress.
- Operates and manages equipment safely and correctly.
- Performs hourly patient rounding as required by guidelines and standards.
- Uses the principles of AIDET in every customer encounter.
Requirements
- High school graduate.
- One (1) year prior experience in a psychiatric setting preferred.
- Past experience as a nurse’s aide is preferred.
- BLS Certification within 90 days of hire.
- Prior certification as a CT, MA, or NY CNA is preferred.
Qualifications
- Knowledgeable about sterile techniques and infection control procedures.
- Knowledgeable about behaviors and statements indicating elevated safety risks, including suicide, homicide, and psychosis.
- Ability to manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stressful situations.
Skills

Pay
Salary range: $18.13 - $34.50 per hour, DOE.

Full-time, standard hours: 36 hours per week, Eve/Night 12, Work Shift: 6:45 AM-7:15 PM, Org Unit: 938, Department: Psych Unit, Exempt: No.
