Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Mental Health Technician (MHT) is responsible for:

• Observing and recording patient information pertinent to the treatment plan
• Welcomeing new patients through specific admission protocols
• Assisting with the patient discharge process
• Maintaining direct patient observation
• Leading patient education, community, goal, and activity groups
• Aiding nursing staff by taking vital signs and helping patients perform ADLs
• Frequently responding to a variety of patient situations such as codes, behavioral outbursts, attempts to introduce contraband, and medical issues
• Adjusting therapeutic approaches based on acuity, age, gender, and cultural considerations

Qualifications

No prior experience is required. A minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of experience in an acute hospital, rehabilitation hospital, or skilled nursing unit is preferred.

Education and Training

• A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• Certification as a nursing assistant (CNA) is preferred where required by the state where the hospital resides.
• A current BLS certification is required.
• Crisis management certification per hospital policy and standards is required.
