About the role

The Mental Health Technician performs routine patient care duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role includes assisting with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers; monitoring patients for verbal and non-verbal cues of potential aggressive behaviors; and using appropriate interventions to de-escalate situations. The technician reports alterations in sensory perceptual images, recognizing differences between illusions, delusions, and hallucinations, and takes action to prevent patient harm while communicating these issues to the Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

  • Follow instructions given by nursing leadership and outlined in Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Report patient medical problems to the Registered Nurse.
  • Report alterations in sensory perceptual images, recognizing differences between illusions, delusions, and hallucinations; monitor safety issues and take action to prevent patient harm; communicate these issues to the Registered Nurse.
  • Provide care to patients in a manner that considers safety, patients’ rights, comfort, and a therapeutic environment.
  • Assist with admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients in a timely manner and complete appropriate documentation.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living and encourage independent behavior with appropriate interventions.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Prefer a minimum of two years of college in areas of psychology, social work, mental health, or other related health fields.
  • Experience in dealing with the emotionally disturbed preferred.
  • Employees must be in good standing (employment/corrective action history, evaluation, etc.) to be considered for internal transfers.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 36 hours per week.
  • Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM.
  • Every other weekend required.
