About the Role
Join our team as a Mental Health Tech in the Behavioral Medicine Department at Trinity Health Livonia, a 304-bed acute care hospital offering comprehensive services including emergency care, surgery, rehabilitation, cancer treatment, cardiology, geriatrics, and women's health. This role involves delivering patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, engaging with clients and their families, and supporting multidisciplinary teams in discharge planning and aftercare.
Responsibilities
- Observe patient status while assisting with activities of daily living; update RN on observations and concerns.
- Document patient data accurately and follow the plan of care as directed by the RN.
- Prioritize patient care activities based on patient needs and schedule.
- Assist in admission, discharge, and transfer processes, including checking patient belongings and performing body checks.
- Perform tasks assigned by the RN, such as running groups, managing sharps, handling linen, and taking vital signs.
- Instruct patients and document education individually and through didactic groups.
- Monitor the unit and patients to ensure a safe environment, including supervising the day room, visiting hours, and meal times.
- Monitor nutritional intake and output of patients; collect specimens as ordered.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living or perform them when patients are unable.
- Provide patient care appropriate to the age of the patients served on assigned units.
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of patients and families.
- Develop and maintain effective communication with all members of the healthcare team.
- Follow verbal and written instructions accurately under RN supervision.
- Participate in unit-based Quality Improvement Programs.
- Maintain a professional work environment, responding to the needs of patients, families, and coworkers.
- Provide backup support for the Unit Clerk as needed.
- Record ongoing progress notes in B.A.R. format for each client contact.
- Participate in didactic presentations in a competent and professional manner.
Requirements
- High School Diploma required.
- Associate degree or 60 hours of education in a human services field (e.g., nursing, psychology, social work) preferred.
- Previous experience as a mental health tech preferred.
- Certified Addictions Counselor 1 (CAC-1) and/or Social Work Tech certification preferred.
- Experience in Mental Health/Substance Abuse services preferred.
- BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certifications required.
- Experience running didactic groups with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
