Medicolegal Death Investigator - All Position Types (Full-time, Part-time, Limited Duration, Variable Hour)

About the Role

Washington County Health and Human Services Department is recruiting for multiple Medicolegal Death Investigator positions at the Medical Examiner’s Office within the Public Health Division. This recruitment will be used to hire future regular, part-time, limited duration, and variable hour opportunities that may become available within the next six months.

Responsibilities

• Conduct death investigations for sudden, unexpected, suspicious, or unattended deaths within Washington County’s jurisdiction.
• Act as the eyes and ears of the forensic pathologist, providing data and evidence to determine the cause and manner of death.
• Collect biological specimens, operate specialized medical equipment, and document findings accurately.
• Preserve evidence and conduct comprehensive scene investigations.
• Collaborate with law enforcement, the District Attorney’s Office, families, and medical personnel.
• Prepare clear, concise, and accurate written reports.

Requirements

• Ability to obtain the Registry Diplomate level of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) within one year.
• Possess a valid Oregon driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical activity, including lifting 100 pounds from the floor to waist level.
• Pass a respiratory mask fit test.
• Successfully complete a criminal history check in accordance with Oregon Administrative Rules.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

• Associate Degree in a related field (e.g., criminal justice, forensics, biology, anatomy) AND one year of experience in death investigation or handling of human remains.
• OR three years of experience in death investigation or handling of human remains.

Skills

• Effective communication and sound judgment.
• Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
• Proficiency in preparing accurate written reports.
• Knowledge of medical and criminal investigative practices, human anatomy, and medical terminology.

Pay

$34.88 - $42.40 Hourly

Schedule

• Limited Duration: Typically 1-2 years, eligible for benefits similar to full-time regular positions.
• Variable Hour: Up to 20 hours per week over a three-month period, with intermittent and irregular assignments. Accrues sick time only.
• Part-Time: Average of 20 hours per week. Accrues sick and vacation time, prorated holiday pay, but no medical/dental/vision benefits.

Work Location

Primarily at the Public Services Building in Hillsboro, OR, with frequent travel to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Clackamas, OR, regional hospitals, and death scenes within Washington County.

Additional Information

This position is not eligible for remote work. Part-time and variable hour positions may not provide sufficient hours to meet ABMDI certification requirements within one year.
