About The Opportunity

The Washington County Health and Human Services Department is hiring for a Variable Hour Medicolegal Death Investigator position at the Medical Examiner’s Office within the Public Health Division. This position partners with law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office to conduct death investigations for sudden, unexpected, suspicious, or unattended deaths within Washington County’s jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

  • Receive general administrative support and supervision from the Chief Medicolegal Death Investigator.
  • Collaborate with families, medical personnel, and partner agencies.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate written reports.
  • Conduct death investigations and provide data and evidence to the forensic pathologist.
  • Support operational needs by providing coverage during staff absences, trainings, leaves, and other scheduling demands.
  • Participate in scene investigations, collect biological specimens, operate specialized medical equipment, and preserve evidence.
  • Use proper body mechanics and coordinate with team members when moving remains.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree closely related to medicolegal death investigation, such as criminal justice, forensics, crime scene investigation, anthropology, law enforcement, biology, anatomy, medical; AND One (1) year of experience related to death investigation and/or handling of the deceased or human remains.
  • Three (3) years of experience related to death investigation and/or handling of the deceased or human remains.
  • Ability to complete the registered level of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators within one year.
  • Driver's license valid in the State of Oregon and an acceptable driving record.
  • Able to perform moderately strenuous physical activity and withstand exposure to unpleasant elements at death scenes.
  • Able to safely lift 100 pounds from the floor to the waist level.
  • Able to pass a respiratory mask fit test.
  • Able to pass a criminal history check in accordance with Oregon Administrative Rules.

Qualifications

  • Effective communication skills and sound judgment.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate written reports.
  • Currently certified with the registry level by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI).

Pay

The pay range for this position is $33.96 - $41.29 hourly.

Schedule

The work schedule is variable and in-person only. Work locations may vary, primarily at Public Services Building, Hillsboro, OR, frequently travel to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Clackamas, OR, and death scenes within Washington County jurisdiction as needed. Work hours may vary considerably from week to week, with assignments that may be intermittent and irregular.
