About the Role
The Certified Medication Assistant (CMA) assists residents with medication administration and treatments under the direction of the RN. The CMA is responsible for providing personal care to Assisted Living Program participants in publicly-subsidized housing complexes. Responsibilities include administering medications, wound care, aiding with activities of daily living (ADLs), meal preparation, light housekeeping, and maintaining resident apartments. The CMA may also schedule transportation and medical appointments as needed.
Responsibilities
- Maintain professional relationships with residents, nursing staff, volunteers, administrative staff, vendors, caregivers, family members, and property staff.
- Ensure confidentiality and privacy of resident information and operations.
- Encourage resident independence while maintaining dignity.
- Adhere to fire, emergency, and safety procedures, including infection control and oxygen safety.
- Check phone messages, faxes, and communication logs daily; address concerns promptly.
- Review and manage medication orders, including narcotic counts and pharmacy refills.
- Supervise CHHAs and CNAs to ensure implementation of resident care plans.
- Administer medications following proper techniques, including insulin and glucose monitoring.
- Document medication administration and report errors or refusals to the RN.
- Provide personal care, including bathing, oral hygiene, incontinence care, and ostomy care.
- Take and record vital signs and weights; report changes in resident status immediately.
- Assist with ambulation, transfers, and emergency response as needed.
- Perform light housekeeping, laundry, meal preparation, and apartment maintenance.
- Maintain cleanliness of wellness offices, laundry rooms, and equipment.
- Follow facility guidelines and governing regulations.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) certificate.
- 1 year of CNA/CHHA experience.
- Successful completion of medication administration training and statewide competency test.
- NJ Medication Aide certification.
- AHA Heartsaver CPR AED certification (must obtain before end of orientation if not already certified).
- Excellent customer service and bedside manner.
- Training in multiple age populations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and good critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
Schedule
- Scheduled weekly hours: 24.
- Usual workday: 8 hours; may require travel between assisted living program locations.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Frequent physical demands: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing (stairs/ladders), carrying objects, pushing/pulling, twisting, bending, reaching, squatting/kneeling, wrist deviation, pinching/fine motor activities, keyboard use, talking, and hearing.
- Occasional physical demands: Climbing stairs in buildings to provide care.
- Continuous physical demands: Lifting up to 35 lbs (floor to waist and waist level and above).
- Sensory requirements: Accurate near/far vision, color discrimination, depth perception, and hearing.
- Anticipated occupational exposure risks: Bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, airborne communicable diseases, extreme temperatures, radiation, uneven surfaces, extreme noise, dust/particulate matter.
Pay
Pay range: $16.75 - $20.55 per hour (full-time equivalent). Actual compensation may vary based on assigned hours, position status (e.g., part-time), and other relevant factors.
