Medical Technologist - Part time Nights

About the Role

A Medical Technologist conducts diagnostic laboratory tests that are important in detecting, analyzing and treating a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions. A Medical Technologist uses microscopes, chemicals, precision tools, analyzers and computer equipment to perform tests that give doctors and patients detailed information about various conditions, including the progress and prognosis of the patient. A Medical Technologist performs standard laboratory procedures consistently providing high quality patient care and is able to work independently in assigned areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned analytical testing efficiently and accurately using independent judgment as appropriate.
  • Share and demonstrate technical skills with students, technologists, and technicians.
  • Assist management in the evaluation of new instruments and methodologies.
  • Participate in continuing education, competencies, and in-services.
  • Perform proficiency testing.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents used in conducting tests.
  • Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and/or incubator temperatures, following up appropriately when temperatures are out of expected range.
  • Receive and process all specimens brought to the lab, assessing acceptability and knowledge of rejection policy for sub-optimal specimens.
  • Follow send-out procedures when necessary.
  • Help prepare for and participate in all applicable inspections.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required by manager.
  • Assist with inventory management, including unpacking and putting supplies away.
  • Understand and adhere to the Laboratory Patient Identification Policy and Specimen Re-labeling Policy.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, departments, and customers.
  • Work as part of the lab team in a positive manner, assisting co-workers effectively.
  • Devote appropriate time and effort towards the development of student interns.
  • Exhibit flexibility in daily work and activity, responding to change without complaint.
  • Contribute to all areas of the lab, not just scheduled assignments.
  • Take initiative to assist coworkers to facilitate timely processing and completion of work.
  • Follow up on unfinished tasks or difficult problems, developing positive and resourceful solutions.

  • Flex hours to accommodate current staffing and volume trends.

Laboratory Information Systems

  • Operate information systems used in laboratory services daily.
  • Demonstrate appropriate working knowledge of the Meditech lab system for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, inquiry functions, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledgeable of downtime procedures, both short and long term.
  • Utilize the computer system for job-related tasks only.
  • Understand the centralized help desk notification process (e.g., email / 7777).

Laboratory Organizational Skills

  • Produce lab tests in an efficient, organized manner.
  • Effectively prioritize work, adhering to the department’s STAT protocol.
  • Understand that ER specimens are prioritized as STAT.
  • Assign appropriate priority to samples received.
  • Ensure critical and STAT results are called and attended to immediately.
  • Understand the entire workflow process for assigned work area.
  • Multitask without jeopardizing quality and timeliness of work.
  • Maintain focus on details related to workflow.
  • Maintain and meet established turnaround times through organized work processes.

Technical Skills

  • Sufficient knowledge of QC protocols and procedures, bringing exceptions immediately to the manager.
  • Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and maintenance, documenting corrective actions.
  • Present problems in a timely manner to management.
  • Knowledge of the Point of Care Management Program and the laboratory's involvement in its operation.
  • Recognize the importance of accurate patient identification and specimen labeling.

Laboratory Communication

  • Share information in a positive, accurate, and detailed manner.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, departments, and customers.
  • Answer the telephone professionally and promptly, identifying themselves and their department.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all requests, conveying clear, concise, and accurate information.
  • Communicate problems and/or concerns to appropriate supervisory personnel.

Laboratory Teamwork

  • Work as part of the lab team in a positive manner.
  • Demonstrate willingness to assist co-workers effectively and positively.
  • Devote appropriate time and effort towards the development of student interns, inspiring them to achieve their fullest potential.

  • Adjust schedule to provide necessary coverage to meet department needs.
