Employment Type: Part time, 24 hours per week, evening shift, every other weekend required. Pool/PRN position with rotating shifts including weekends; schedule based on departmental needs and hospital census.

About the role

A Medical Technologist conducts diagnostic laboratory tests that are important in detecting, analyzing and treating a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions. A Medical Technologist uses microscopes, chemicals, precision tools, analyzers and computer equipment to perform tests that give doctors and patients detailed information about various conditions, including the progress and prognosis of the patient.

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard laboratory procedures consistently providing high quality patient care.
  • Work independently in assigned areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).
  • Operate and maintain laboratory information systems, including specimen processing, ordering, resulting, inquiry functions, and troubleshooting in the Meditech lab system.
  • Follow downtime procedures for both short and long-term outages.
  • Prioritize work effectively, adhering to STAT protocols and understanding ER specimen prioritization.
  • Assign appropriate priority to samples and ensure critical and STAT results are called and attended to immediately.
  • Maintain established turnaround times through organized workflow and multitasking.
  • Monitor and manage quality control (QC), protocols, and procedures, reporting exceptions to management.
  • Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and maintenance, documenting corrective actions.
  • Perform assigned analytical testing accurately and efficiently using independent judgment.
  • Share and demonstrate technical skills with students, technologists, and technicians.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new instruments and methodologies.
  • Participate in continuing education, competencies, inservices, and proficiency testing.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents used in conducting tests.
  • Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and incubator temperatures, following up on out-of-range readings.
  • Receive, process, and assess the acceptability of specimens, following rejection policies for sub-optimal specimens.
  • Follow send-out procedures when necessary.
  • Prepare for and participate in all applicable inspections.
  • Assist with inventory management, including unpacking and storing supplies.
  • Understand and adhere to the Point of Care Management Program and laboratory policies on patient identification and specimen labeling.
  • Communicate information clearly and professionally with co-workers, departments, and customers.
  • Answer telephones promptly and professionally, providing accurate information.
  • Report problems or concerns to supervisory personnel in a timely manner.
  • Work collaboratively as part of the lab team, assisting co-workers and demonstrating flexibility.
  • Contribute to all areas of the lab, not just scheduled assignments.
  • Take initiative to assist coworkers and follow up on unfinished tasks or problems.
  • Accept constructive criticism to improve performance and patient care.
  • Adjust schedule to meet departmental needs, including flexing hours as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required by the manager.

Skills

  • Laboratory Information Systems: Proficiency in daily operation of lab information systems, including Meditech for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, and troubleshooting.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize work, manage workflow, and multitask without compromising quality or timeliness.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of QC, protocols, and procedures; ability to perform analytical testing, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication with colleagues, departments, and customers.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively, assist co-workers, and adapt to changing needs or assignments.
