Medical Technologist - Part time Nights

Employment Type: Part time, 24 hours per week, evening shift, every other weekend required. Pool/PRN position with rotating shifts including weekends; schedule based on departmental needs and hospital census.

About the role

A Medical Technologist conducts diagnostic laboratory tests that detect, analyze, and treat a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions. Using microscopes, chemicals, precision tools, analyzers, and computer equipment, the technologist performs tests that provide doctors and patients with detailed information about conditions, including patient progress and prognosis. The role involves performing standard laboratory procedures to ensure high-quality patient care and working independently in assigned areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned analytical testing efficiently and accurately using independent judgment as appropriate.
  • Monitor and maintain quality control (QC), protocols, and procedures; report exceptions immediately to management.
  • Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and maintenance; document corrective actions.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents used in conducting tests.
  • Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and incubator temperatures; follow up on out-of-range temperatures.

  • Receive, process, and assess the acceptability of specimens; adhere to rejection policies and handle sub-optimal specimens.
  • Follow send-out procedures when necessary.
  • Assist with inventory management, including unpacking and storing supplies.
  • Understand and adhere to the Laboratory Patient Identification Policy and Specimen Re-labeling Policy.
  • Participate in continuing education, competencies, in-services, and proficiency testing.
  • Assist management in evaluating new instruments and methodologies.
  • Prepare for and participate in all applicable inspections.
  • Share and demonstrate technical skills with students, technologists, and technicians.
  • Understand and meet turnaround-time expectations.
  • Knowledge of the Point of Care Management Program and the laboratory’s role in its operation.
  • Communicate effectively with co-workers, departments, and customers; answer telephones professionally and respond promptly to requests.
  • Work as part of the lab team in a positive manner; assist co-workers and contribute to all areas of the lab.
  • Exhibit flexibility in daily work, including adjusting schedule to meet department needs.
  • Accept and apply constructive criticism to improve performance and patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required by management.

Laboratory Information Systems

  • Operate information systems used in laboratory services daily.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the Meditech lab system for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, inquiry functions, and troubleshooting.
  • Understand and follow downtime procedures for both short and long-term scenarios.
  • Utilize the computer system for job-related tasks only.
  • Follow the centralized help desk notification process (e.g., email / 7777).

Laboratory Organizational Skills

  • Produce lab tests in an efficient and organized manner.
  • Effectively prioritize work and adhere to the department’s STAT protocol.
  • Prioritize ER specimens as STAT and assign appropriate priority to all samples received.
  • Call and attend to critical and STAT results immediately.
  • Understand the entire workflow process for assigned work areas.
  • Multitask without compromising quality or timeliness.
  • Maintain focus on workflow details to meet established turnaround times.

Laboratory Communication

  • Share information in a positive, accurate, and detailed manner.
  • Communicate problems or concerns to appropriate supervisory personnel in a timely manner.

Laboratory Teamwork

  • Devote time and effort to developing student interns and inspiring them to achieve their fullest potential.
  • Exhibit flexibility in work assignments, coverage, training, and new policies.
  • Take initiative to assist coworkers to facilitate timely processing and completion of work.
  • Follow up on unfinished tasks or difficult problems and develop positive, resourceful solutions to share with coworkers.
  • Willingly adjust hours to accommodate staffing or volume trends.
