Medical Technologist - Part time Nights

Employment Type: Part time, 24 hours per week, evening shift, every other weekend required. Pool/PRN position with rotating shifts including weekends; schedule based on departmental needs and hospital census.

About the role

A Medical Technologist conducts diagnostic laboratory tests that are important in detecting, analyzing and treating a wide variety of diseases and medical conditions. The role uses microscopes, chemicals, precision tools, analyzers, and computer equipment to perform tests that provide doctors and patients detailed information about various conditions, including patient progress and prognosis. The Medical Technologist performs standard laboratory procedures, consistently providing high-quality patient care, and works independently in assigned areas (Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology).

Responsibilities

• Perform standard laboratory procedures with high quality and timeliness.
• Work independently in assigned areas such as Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, and Microbiology.
• Utilize Laboratory Information Systems, including Meditech lab system for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, inquiry functions, and troubleshooting.
• Adhere to downtime procedures for both short and long-term outages.
• Prioritize work effectively, including STAT and ER specimens, and maintain established turnaround times.
• Perform assigned analytical testing using independent judgment as appropriate.
• Monitor and maintain quality control (QC), protocols, and procedures; report exceptions to management.
• Assist in problem-solving, troubleshooting, and maintenance; document corrective actions.
• Prepare solutions and reagents used in conducting tests.
• Monitor refrigerator, freezer, and incubator temperatures; follow up on out-of-range temperatures.
• Receive, process, and assess the acceptability of specimens; follow rejection policies for sub-optimal specimens.
• Follow send-out procedures when necessary.
• Participate in continuing education, competencies, in-services, and proficiency testing.
• Assist in the evaluation of new instruments and methodologies.
• Prepare for and participate in all applicable inspections.
• Assist with inventory management, including unpacking and storing supplies.
• Understand and adhere to the Point of Care Management Program and the laboratory’s role in its operation.
• Ensure accurate patient identification and specimen labeling per laboratory policies.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers, departments, and customers; respond promptly to requests.
• Demonstrate teamwork by assisting co-workers, exhibiting flexibility, and contributing to all areas of the lab.
• Mentor and inspire student interns to achieve their fullest potential.
• Accept and apply constructive criticism to improve performance and patient care.
• Adjust schedule as needed to meet departmental needs.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required by management.

Skills

• Laboratory Information Systems: Proficient in daily operation of lab information systems, including Meditech for specimen processing, ordering, resulting, and troubleshooting.
• Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize work, multitask, and maintain an organized workflow to meet turnaround times.
• Technical Skills: Knowledge of QC protocols, troubleshooting, and maintenance; ability to perform analytical testing independently.
