Medical Technologist - On-Call

About the role
The Michigan State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory is seeking a Medical Technologist in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory section. This role performs and evaluates complex chemical and microscopic tests to provide timely, accurate diagnostic data for veterinarians. Duties involve clinical laboratory procedures in clinical chemistry, immunohematology, hematology, coagulation, immunology, and urinalysis. Work hours vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Duties include exposure to veterinary biological specimens, hazardous waste, regulated chemicals, biological materials, and working on a video display terminal more than 25% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Performs lab tests on specimens using automated and manual methods (40%).
- Evaluates laboratory results for discrepancies to ensure proper reporting. Enters pertinent information into the computer to generate results (40%).
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs of complex lab equipment, calibrates instruments, maintains QA/QC records, identifies variances, resolves QA/QC issues, and troubleshoots as necessary (10%).
- Participates in problem-solving, laboratory policy-making, and information distribution. Engages in VDL activities, staff meetings, SOP drafting, and process improvement efforts (5%).
- Consults with veterinarians and other clients to provide information and lab results, assisting in the interpretation of test results (5%).
Schedule
On-call shifts from approximately 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., including 1 to 2 weekends per month.
Qualifications
- Board certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) (ASCP or BOR) or eligible for certification.
Health Risks
Exposure to unfixed animal tissue.
