Job Summary
About the role
The position involves conducting various laboratory tests to support the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It also includes problem-solving, interpreting results, and ensuring the quality of testing processes.
Responsibilities
- Conducts laboratory testing using techniques in microbiology, histo-pathology, hematology, diagnostic immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, or morphological examinations.
- Initiates and implements standard operating procedures.
- Organizes work flow to ensure efficient and accurate output.
- Reviews and verifies results for accuracy and credibility before releasing them.
- Records and reports results in a timely manner.
- Solves problems to achieve acceptable test results and ensures optimal system and instrument operations.
- Interprets and verifies lab findings with respect to the type and quality of specimens submitted.
- Correlates test results with available clinical information and other laboratory data.
- Analyzes and evaluates each testing process to ensure final results are valid and accurate.
- Maintains and updates technical knowledge and skills through participation in department meetings, continuing education, and inservice instructions.
- Aids in developing operational procedures to ensure effective workflow.
- Serves as a resource for automated and other equipment, and in standard operation decision-making.
- Covers laboratory operations in the absence of a supervisor.
- Affirms compliance with Quality Control and Quality Assurance Programs.
- Serves as a resource to address quality of service issues and implement internal quality assurance monitors or projects.
- Takes corrective action to resolve problems and reviews unresolved problems with the supervisor.
- Reports action limit results according to standard procedures.
- May serve as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA 88 for High Complexity Testing.
- Performs proficiency testing and reports results.
- Advises providers and nursing service personnel on correct specimen collection, handling, and processing procedures.
- Aids providers in determining appropriate laboratory services for patient care.
- Assists in training of technical students and/or new technologist employees.
- Aids in developing technical procedures and in writing training procedures.
- Reviews and critiques new procedures developed by others.
- Detects and repairs subtle instrument and/or reagent problems.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology from an accredited school OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
- Medical Technologist License (Hawaii) required at hire.

- Basic knowledge and skills of general clinical lab.
