Medical Technologist, On-Call
Job Summary
Works independently and performs a wide range of medical laboratory tests and procedures to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Guides, trains, and may provide leadership to students, clinicians and technical staff. Has knowledge of and adheres to all related regulatory requirements. Reports to the department or facility Laboratory Clinical Manager.
About the Role
Essential Responsibilities include performing and reporting accurate and timely clinical laboratory tests, maintaining accurate documentation, analyzing and appraising lab results, assisting others with more difficult procedures or interpretations, recognizing various age-related needs and providing age appropriate care as indicated, training and orienting new employees, providing patient, provider and staff education, participating in quality assurance activities, managing variance log processes and updating database, investigating, resolving and documenting exceptions to proficiency surveys, overseeing and implementing new method startup and correlation studies, writing and revising standard operating procedures in accordance with regulations, functioning as a point of reference on clinical laboratory matters for other laboratory staff, performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration and making minor repairs to instrumentation, performing specimen collection procedures and processes specimens for tracking and transport as needed, using personal protective equipment appropriately and demonstrating safe work practices in accordance with laboratory and company policy, maintaining a clean and safe work environment, contributing to a cost-effective laboratory operation and helping maintain an adequate supply inventory, assisting manager in scheduling and finding replacement staff as needed, participating in interviewing and selecting potential candidates for hiring, preparing for and participating in the accrediting body inspection process, reviewing test results in accordance with regulatory guidelines, overseeing point-of-care testing areas and ensuring compliance with accrediting agencies, using computer systems as required and according to company and departmental procedures, demonstrating excellent customer service skills, having positive customer interactions and demonstrating good service recovery skills, conducting him/herself in accordance with the principles of the Labor Management Partnership, and performing other duties as assigned.
Experience
- Education: Bachelor of Science degree required.
- Licenses, Certifications, Registrations: Medical Technologist Certificate within 12 months of hire from American Society for Clinical Pathology OR Medical Lab Scientist Certificate within 12 months of hire from American Society for Clinical Pathology.
Preferred Qualifications
- IMMUNOLOGY, IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY, SPECIAL COAGULATION, OR PROTEIN ELECTORPHOREISIS EXPERIENCE PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED.
