About the role
The Medical Laboratory Scientist plays a crucial role in the clinical laboratory, performing various test procedures and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of results to physicians.
Responsibilities
- Technical responsibilities: Enters orders correctly, verifies specimen appropriateness, processes specimens, and performs QC tests.
- Collecting, receiving, and processing specimens: Labels specimens accurately, evaluates appropriateness, prioritizes processing, aliquots specimens, and prepares samples.
- Maintaining test system integrity: Performs preventive maintenance, verifies reagents and supplies, and ensures adequate inventory.
- Performing tests: Prioritizes and completes tests within TAT, reviews results, and interprets findings.
- Post-test specimen storage: Stores and retrieves specimens according to protocols.
- Charge capture/billing: Verifies and reports results, generates reports, and amends erroneous reports.
- Universal responsibilities: Follows SOPs, operates equipment, and maintains a clean, safe work environment.
Qualifications
- Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Allied Health.
- Certification: General MLS or MT (ASCP) Certification or eligibility for categorical BB, C, H, or M (ASCP) Certification.
