About the role

Under close supervision, performs routine clinical laboratory tests of a repetitive nature and typically limited to one laboratory section. Performs routine qualitative and quantitative clinical laboratory tests on patient specimens following appropriate methodologies and established policies and procedures. Prepares and maintains accurate records of specimens received in the laboratory. May prepare media, stains, reagent and other solutions used in performing laboratory tests.

Responsibilities

• Analyzes test results; relays results to physicians and other authorized personnel
• Records tests results and reviews for accuracy and conformance to established quality control parameters
• Utilizes, calibrates and maintains automated, non-automated and computerized laboratory equipment; performs quality control checks on equipment
• Obtains specimens from patients such as blood and transports to laboratory
• Selects, uses, cleans and maintains equipment for utilization
• Complies with established administrative lab policies and procedures
• Maintains compliance with requirements of lab safety, OSHA accreditation and regulatory agencies
• Performs other related duties as assigned
• Promotes the values of the DMC by demonstrating behaviors supportive of a collaborative environment

About the facility

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, DMCUL comprises Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, two rapid response hospital laboratories, Centralized Stat Lab, Centralized Blood Bank Lab, and a full-service outreach infrastructure including patient service centers, remote ambulatory laboratories, marketing staff, courier system, and billing department.

The DMC University Laboratories service area covers the entire Southeast Michigan market and offers:

• Test menu of over 1,000 tests, including high-end specialty tests
• Less than 1% of tests sent to outside reference laboratories
• Reference laboratory services to many other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and several out-of-state facilities
