Medical Technician

About the role

This position serves as a liaison between medical and residential services divisions, ensuring high-quality healthcare for pediatric and developmentally disabled individuals. You will maintain medical records, administer medications, and support healthcare providers while adhering to federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities

• Meet and maintain all federal and state regulatory guidelines and standards.
• Communicate effectively with healthcare providers regarding care for the service population.
• Act as a liaison between medical and residential services divisions.
• Maintain adequate inventory of medications/supplies, ensuring they are within date and properly stored.
• Ensure proper disposal of unused and expired medications.
• Maintain electronic medical health care records and the federal Medical Portal.
• Develop and maintain an accurate medication administration record (MAR) for each child.
• Administer prescription and over-the-counter medications to children.
• Carry out all treatment orders as directed by physicians or advanced practice providers (APPs).
• Assist in daily MAR audits and ensure proper documentation.
• Report all medication errors to the RN Manager.
• Compile daily medical lists for appropriate distribution.
• Assist in transporting children to and from the on-campus clinic for medical appointments.
• Maintain first aid kits per licensing standards.
• Assist in scheduling medical appointments and the medical intake process.
• Maintain confidentiality of healthcare records in compliance with HIPAA and Compass Connections protocols.
• Adhere to scheduled hours, including on-call, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Apply positive behavior management techniques, including verbal redirection and de-escalation.
• Recognize signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and sexually provocative behavior; implement reporting procedures.
• Show compassionate and professional appreciation and affection toward children.
• Plan, organize, and prioritize daily work using sound judgment.
• Implement Compass Connections safety protocols, including emergency evacuations.
• Monitor established healthcare plans for the service population as prescribed by providers.
• Complete accurate documentation in accordance with agency policies and regulatory requirements.
• Meet all pre-determined deadlines required by the program and federal partners.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED (required).
• Current Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant Certificate, or Certified Nursing Assistant License.
• Current BLS certification (PALS preferred).
• First aid and CPR certifications.
• Professional experience working with pediatric and developmentally disabled populations.
• Experience in a healthcare setting.
• Working knowledge of vitals, blood draws, lab orders, medication administration, and vaccines/injections.
• Familiarity with Electronic Medical Records Systems.
• Pass pre-employment and random drug screens.
• Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
• Pass pre-employment and biennial criminal background checks.
• Ability to respond sensitively to cultural and socio-economic characteristics of the service population.
• Work collaboratively with staff, service providers, and professionals.
• Effective written and verbal communication in English.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining emotional control and professional composure.
• Computer literacy required for the position.
• Work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team with minimal supervision.
• Demonstrate knowledge of Compass Connections policies and procedures.
• Complete and sign Operations Policy and Procedure review and certification.
• Provide a current physical-medical release and proof of immunizations, titers, or declinations for:
  • MMR
  • Varicella
  • HepB
  • HepA
  • Tetanus
  • PPD
  • Meningococcal (preferred)
• Annual Influenza vaccination or approved exemption (required as a condition of employment).
• Ability to perform physical activities such as extensive walking, lifting patients, stretching, and bending.
• Strong professional people skills, including oral, written, listening, and non-verbal communication.
