About the Role
As a Medical Records Specialist at Reston Hospital Center, you will support the Health Information Management (HIM) Director by managing workflow queues in Horizon Patient Folder (HPF)/McKesson Patient Folder (MPF), working within 3M 360 Encompass, resolving unbilled accounts, and processing physician suspensions. You will also serve as the primary point of contact in the absence of the HIM Director or Coordinator.
Responsibilities
- Retrieve discharged medical records from various hospital departments and reconcile them to ensure all records are accounted for.
- Facilitate the retrieval, printing, storage, archival, and record retention of documents and alternate media that cannot be scanned into HPF/MPF (e.g., fetal monitor strips).
- Assist with the physician suspension process, including evaluating suspensions, creating recommendation lists, sending notice letters, and making reminder calls.
- Prepare, scan, and index medical records and loose documents.
- Perform quality control validation to ensure all documents are accurately scanned and associated with the correct record.
- Complete any state-required certification programs and continuing education for birth certificate processing.
- Interact with parents to collect and document birth information, deliver and guide completion of forms, and assist with the Acknowledgment of Paternity form.
- Review patient medical records and other resources to obtain required birth information.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Hospital or medical office experience preferred but not required.
- Previous experience handling patient health information, medical records, document imaging, or related fields is strongly preferred.
- State certification may be required for birth certificate processing; training and course fees will be provided.
