Medical Physicist Certified - Full Time - Cancer Institute

About the role

The Certified Medical Physicist ensures the quality of care in the use of radiation producing sources and imaging equipment. They calibrate or guide others in calibration of radiation therapy equipment, implement quality control procedures for imaging devices, perform calculations and patient treatment plans, dose verification, and chart checks. They also develop and maintain radiation therapy safety procedures in compliance with regulations.

Responsibilities

• Consults with the Dosimetrist, Physicist, and Physician in development and maintenance of a quality assurance program for radiation therapy treatment modalities.
• Performs calibration on the radiation therapy equipment in accordance with standards set forth by State and Federal regulations.
• Develops and maintains the radiation safety program.
• Provides technical direction, training, and continuing education to Physicists and Dosimetrists.
• Provides assistance to Radiation Oncologists and Medical Physicists in performing HDR and LDR brachytherapy procedures.
• Plans and performs the procedure as needed.
• Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.

Requirements

• Education/Formal Training Requirements: Master's Degree in Medical Physics, Medical Physics, Physical Science, Radiologic Physics, Engineering, Doctorate in Medical Physics, Engineering, Physical Science, Radiologic Physics.
• Work Experience Requirements: 3-5 years Medical radiation physics.
• Licenses And Certifications Requirements: Certification in Therapeutic Radiological Physics - American Board of Radiology.

Skills and Abilities

• Demonstrates competency in medical physics with the ability to carry out more complex assignments.
• Able to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as technical reports and manuals.
• Able to communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and patients.
• Able to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
• Able to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of work flow.

Physical Demands

• The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
• Must have good balance and coordination.
• The physical requirements of this position are: medium work - exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 25 lbs. of force frequently.
• The Associate is required to have close visual acuity including color, depth perception, and field of vision to perform an activity, such as assessing patients, preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
• Frequent invasive and non-invasive patient contact.
• Exposure to patient body fluids as well as exposure to hazardous or poisonous materials.
• Ability to react quickly to emergency situations.
