About the Role

A Medical Payment Poster is responsible for the expedient and accurate posting of payments received, both manually and electronically. This position processes and posts a high volume of billing statements, updates account adjustments, and maintains records of account standings. The role involves monitoring patient and insurance accounts receivable.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure notes, copies of EOBs, denials, and other correspondence are entered in the patient account.
  • Accurately record payments and adjustments in the patient accounting system daily.
  • Meet or exceed departmental productivity standards consistently.
  • Serve as a member of the billing department team (Coding/Data Entry/etc.) and perform duties necessary to ensure team projects/goals are completed.
  • Print, pull, and file Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).
  • Apply insurance payments according to specific dates and procedures outlined in the EOB.
  • Meet monthly closing deadlines as set by the organization.
  • Work closely with the Billing Manager on reversals of payments, adjustments, and refunds.
  • Research reimbursement and billing issues with management.
  • Work and clear up any unapplied balances.
  • Review insurance and patient accounts and request adjustments and/or refunds as appropriate.
  • Cross-train to provide billing department coverage for any task needed to meet end-of-month deadlines.
  • Stay current with rules, updates, or changes in state and federal regulations.
  • Inform the Billing Manager of accounts receivable issues and their potential impact on the organization and reimbursement.
  • Continually seek ways to improve the accounts receivable process for efficiency in daily operations.
  • Participate in emergency and disaster response programs, including assignment to an emergency response team.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Two years of experience in a medical office environment, including payment posting, work with Medicaid, Managed Care Organizations, commercial and other third-party payer claims submission, and appeals.
  • Experience with medical and dental terminology, procedural and diagnostic coding (ICD, CPT, CDT, and HCPCS).
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and efficiently with the public and all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in operating computers, copiers, and fax machines.
  • Proficient in practice management systems and Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Basic accounting knowledge.
