Medical Laboratory Technologist CLS/MLS
Position Summary
MFM Health is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist to join our laboratory team. The role involves performing moderate-complexity laboratory testing in accordance with Massachusetts 105 CMR 180.000, CLIA regulations, and applicable federal and state requirements. Responsibilities include all phases of testing, from pre-analytical to post-analytical processes, ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of laboratory results.
Key Responsibilities
Test Performance (Pre-Analytical and Analytical)
- Perform accurate and appropriate moderate-complexity testing according to established laboratory procedures.
- Evaluate specimens for acceptability and ensure proper labeling and identification.
- Investigate and document unacceptable specimens.
- Handle and store specimens according to required conditions and protocols.
- Organize workload efficiently to ensure timely completion of testing.
- Verify that test results correspond to the correct patient and specimen prior to release.
- Follow all established procedures prior to performing testing.
Test Result Reporting (Post-Analytical)
- Report results accurately and within established turnaround times.
- Follow protocols for critical value identification and notification, documentation of communication with providers, and correction of erroneous results.
- Report state-required reportable diseases to the Massachusetts State Laboratory Institute and document appropriately in the LIS.
Quality Control and Compliance
- Participate in periodic review of laboratory procedures and assist in updates as needed to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Perform and document quality control procedures, calibration and instrument checks, and ensure quality control is acceptable before reporting patient results.
- Accurately evaluate quality control results and document all results.
- Follow established protocols for failures and escalate unresolved issues.
- Hold patient testing and reporting when quality control is outside acceptable limits.
- Adhere to all regulatory requirements: Massachusetts 105 CMR 180.000, CLIA, OSHA, and HIPAA.
Instrument Maintenance and Calibration
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance activities, including daily, weekly, and monthly tasks as required.
- Calibrate and calibrate verification instruments and document all maintenance and calibration activities.
- Ensure instruments are functioning properly prior to use.
Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution
- Troubleshoot issues related to instruments and equipment, reagents, and quality control failures, and patient specimens.
- Follow established troubleshooting protocols and document all steps taken and corrective actions.
- Notify Laboratory Manager or Technical Supervisor when issues cannot be resolved.
Safety and Infection Control
- Adhere to all Universal Precautions and laboratory safety protocols.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment at all times.
- Follow policies for chemical handling, biohazard disposal, and exposure prevention.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including disinfection of work surfaces and proper waste disposal.
- Report safety hazards immediately.
- Maintain familiarity with Safety Data Sheets and spill response procedures for biological and chemical exposures.
Documentation and Record Management
- Accurately document patient testing, quality control results, maintenance and calibration, and corrective actions.
- Ensure all records are complete, organized, and audit-ready.
- Maintain documentation in accordance with retention requirements.
Inventory and Work Area Management
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels of reagents and supplies.
- Monitor expiration dates and remove expired materials.
- Perform regular inventory checks and notify appropriate personnel for reordering.
- Maintain clean, organized work areas.
Competency and Scope of Practice
- Perform testing only within the scope of training and documented competency.
- Participate in initial training and ongoing competency assessments.
- Follow direction from the Laboratory Manager or Technical Supervisor.
- Do not perform high-complexity testing unless specifically trained, qualified, and authorized in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Collaboration and Communication
- Communicate effectively with providers and clinical staff, including nursing and medical assistants, to support safe and effective specimen collection and testing workflows.
- Collaborate with laboratory team members to support workflow.
- Escalate clinical, operational, or compliance concerns appropriately.
- Document relevant issues, observations, and process concerns in appropriate logs or systems to ensure continuity of information across laboratory staff.
Hourly Pay Range
$34 - $48; commensurate with experience
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science.
- Minimum 3 years of full-time clinical laboratory experience in chemistry, hematology, and microbiology (preferred).
- 1–3 years of clinical laboratory experience in chemistry, hematology, and microbiology (preferred).
- Certification MT or MLS certification through ASCP or equivalent preferred.
- Experience with laboratory diagnostic instruments such as Sysmex, Abbott Architect, and Cepheid.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), including Orchard or equivalent systems.
- Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) integrations and laboratory workflows.
Regulatory Requirement
The Medical Laboratory Technologist performs moderate-complexity testing only and must not perform high-complexity testing unless specifically trained, qualified, and authorized in accordance with regulatory requirements.
