Medical Laboratory Scientist - Traveler

About the role

Perform laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintain compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety guidelines.

Responsibilities

• Maintain records demonstrating proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
• Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures (see department SOPs).
• Review and release test results.
• Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
• Follow established policies and procedures when test systems deviate from acceptable performance levels.
• Identify and address problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of results; document corrective actions.
• Report STAT or Critical results to clients following department procedures.
• Answer questions from customers or other lab personnel, if applicable.
• Maintain complete records of all testing performed on-site.
• Maintain the general appearance of the department.
• Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and opened dates, if applicable.
• Review and train on new procedures.
• Attend monthly department and additional training/educational meetings.
• Participate in all applicable safety training sessions; know the location and contents of the safety manual and applicable safety equipment.
• Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.
• Perform other duties as directed by supervisor.

Requirements

• BS in Medical Technology preferred; OR BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology, or Associates degree in a Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 (published March 14, 1990).
• Foreign-educated candidates must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF (International Education Research Foundation). U.S.-educated candidates must provide a detailed original transcript.
• Eligibility for national certification as an MT/MLT from a recognized organization (ASCP or AMT).
• Solid understanding of basic laboratory testing, QC, and QA, as well as knowledge of all laboratory areas.
• Good computer skills and ability to adapt to working in multiple computer systems.
• 1 year of clinical experience in high-complexity testing preferred; minimum 1 year for candidates with BS/BA in Chemistry or Biology.
• National and state licensure as required.
• Ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously.
• Ability to interact with other departments and clients; good customer service skills.
• Commitment to protecting patient confidentiality at all times.
• Generalist experience in chemistry, hematology, and blood bank required.
• Ability to work independently on the MN shift (10:30 PM - 7:00 AM).

Schedule

Monday–Friday, with rotation for weekends and holidays. Evening shift: 10:30 PM – 7:00 AM.
