About the Role

Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Microbiology department are essential in diagnosing and managing infectious diseases through routine and complex molecular, microbiological, and immunological testing. The team adheres to strict aseptic techniques, follows safety protocols, and ensures precise data entry and quality assurance. In addition to bench work, MLS professionals troubleshoot instruments, work on LEAN processes, and collaborate with providers and nurses to support patient care. The Microbiology team processes samples from multiple locations, leveraging advanced technologies such as molecular testing and other high-complexity test methods while utilizing LEAN principles to enhance efficiency and maintain excellence in diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and complex analytic procedures on blood, body fluids, or specimens using manual techniques or laboratory instruments and information systems for diagnosing, preventing, or treating disease.
  • Applies knowledge, training, and independent clinical judgment to take action and develop solutions.
  • Collaborates with leadership to improve processes and resolve problems, including:
    • Evaluating instrument performance and quality control results to ensure accuracy and reliability of analytic data.
    • Correlating results with other lab data and/or disease states.
    • Identifying technical, instrument, pharmacologic, and/or physiologic causes of unexpected test results.
  • Performs calibration, preventive maintenance, quality control, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment, instruments, and/or laboratory information systems.
  • Performs processing, testing, and reporting without direct supervision after successful competency testing.
  • Complies with departmental and institutional policies and procedures, including compliance, quality assessment, safety, environmental, and infection control.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Participates in quality assessment and improvement activities, including proficiency testing, data gathering for quality assurance, developing safe work practices, and serving on quality improvement committees.
  • Maintains the laboratory and procedures in an inspection-ready condition.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Coursework must align with the duties of the specific Medical Laboratory discipline and meet the education eligibility routes for Medical Laboratory Scientist listed on the ASCP website (ascp.org).
  • Alternatively, possesses a categorical scientist-level certification (e.g., BB, C, CG, CT, M, MB) or has met the requirements for AAB and/or AMT certifications.
  • Six months of experience in a medical laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency and theoretical knowledge sufficient to perform laboratory functions.

Qualifications

  • Certification at the technologist or medical/clinical lab scientist level from a nationally recognized agency (e.g., ASCP, AMT, ASM, AAB, AABB, ACS, or HEW) is preferred.
